Huang Xie (黄歇) — Lord Chunshen

Died 238 BCE

One of the famed "Four Lords of the Warring States," Huang Xie served as Prime Minister of the State of Chu for over 20 years. He was granted the Wu region (modern Suzhou and Shanghai), and the famous Huangpu River (黄浦江) in Shanghai is named in his honor. Shanghai itself is sometimes called "Shencheng" (申城) after his title.

Huang Xiang (黄香)

18-106 CE

The most famous exemplar of filial piety in Chinese history. As a child, he warmed his father's bed in winter and fanned his pillow in summer. This story is immortalized in the Three Character Classic (三字经), a text memorized by Chinese children for centuries: "香九龄,能温席" (Xiang at nine, could warm the bed). He rose to become Minister of the Imperial Secretariat and founded the prestigious Jiangxia Huang lineage.

Huang Ba (黄霸)

130-51 BCE

Renowned Han Dynasty administrator known for his enlightened governance. He served as Governor of Yingchuan and later as Chancellor, implementing reforms that improved agricultural production and reduced crime. His methods of humane administration became a model for Confucian officials.

Huang Zhong (黄忠)

Died 220 CE

Legendary general of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period. Despite his advanced age, he was renowned as an expert archer and fearless warrior. He is celebrated as one of the Five Tiger Generals (五虎上将) under Liu Bei, immortalized in the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and numerous films and games.

Huang Gai (黄盖)

3rd Century CE

Distinguished military general of the Eastern Wu kingdom. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Red Cliffs (208 CE)—one of history's most decisive naval battles. His strategy of pretending to surrender and then setting fire to the enemy fleet helped defeat Cao Cao's overwhelming forces, changing the course of Chinese history.

Huang Qiao (黄峭)

871-953 CE

Tang Dynasty official and progenitor of one of the largest Huang branches. He had 21 sons whom he sent to different regions to establish their own lineages, famously giving them each a poem as guidance. This dispersal created countless Huang communities across China. Many Huang descendants today trace their lineage through one of his 21 sons.

Huang Tingjian (黄庭坚)

1045-1105 CE

One of China's greatest poets and calligraphers. He founded the Jiangxi School of Poetry and is honored as one of the "Four Masters of Song Calligraphy." His work "Cold Food Observance" is considered one of the finest examples of Chinese calligraphy ever created. His poems are still studied and recited today.

Huang Gongwang (黄公望)

1269-1354 CE

Celebrated painter of the Yuan Dynasty and one of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty. His masterpiece "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" (富春山居图) is one of China's most famous landscape paintings, spanning over 6 meters. The painting's dramatic history—including being burned and split into two pieces—is legendary in Chinese art history.

Huang Zongxi (黄宗羲)

1610-1695 CE

Revolutionary philosopher, historian, and one of China's greatest intellectuals. He criticized imperial absolutism and advocated for limiting imperial power—an idea remarkably ahead of its time. His work "Waiting for the Dawn" (明夷待访录) proposed constitutional limits on rulers. He is considered one of the founders of Chinese empiricism and a precursor to democratic thought in China.
